Plans to extend the galley

At least being at home we have had time to come up with ideas, even if we don’t have all the dimensions available to fully complete them 🙂

So we have come up with an idea to extend our galley while giving a nod to a classic Rival feature that is missing from our 38 Centre Cockpit, known as a keyhole bulkhead.

Our bulkhead is far more angular and minimal.

So our new galley is currently an L shape. Hobs with microwave above not yet in this picture (one day a front opening fridge should fit under the hobs as we won’t have an oven there).

So the plan is to reshape the bulkhead a little. The result will be a slightly longer and lower horizontal section and then to curve what is currently the diagonal – that is the homage bit 😉

This will allow us to add a hinged worktop to the saloon side of the bulkhead. When this is in it’s up position it will be level with the other worktops and essentially create a U-shaped galley with a huge amount of extra worktop. In it’s down position it will be hidden behind the saloon cushion.

When the saloon is used as a bed then taller people might need to have the worktop in it’s up position in order to have the original full length of the berth. When the saloon is used for comfy seating or for lots of people we will fold the worktop down.

Essentially, without moving the bulkhead we will achieve most of what is shown in the drawing archive where there is a version of the Rival 38 Centre Cockpit with this bulkhead moved forward 320mm (not sure if any were built with this variation). Yet we will still have the saloon long enough to be a bed. What we don’t gain is extra galley storage (but equally we don’t have as much hard to access corner storage either).

We also think we are going to add a vertical pole/handhold from floor to cabin top at the end of the adapted bulkhead. Will be handy to string up a fruit/veg hammock or put up a shelf for mugs or spices above the bulkhead.

Whether we do something to match on the chart table side of the boat is a plan yet to be decided 🙂

    Hello Dave. Do you have a Rival 38 and if so could you tell me the composition of the deck? Is it solid glass or a foam or ply or balsa core. We are looking at one to buy and am trying to find out about the build quality. Thanks for the info in advance Andy

    Hi Andy,

    If I’m correctly reading the construction drawings I have from the Rival Owners Association (they have a library of the construction drawings for members) then

    – a 20mm balsa core at least in some places (there is an inserted note in the drawing saying in foredeck and coachroof). That on 1 x 2 oz wet c.s.m. with 3 x 2ox c.s.m. over

    – It looks like the side decks were specified as 6 x 2ox C.S.M. Plus two longitudinal stiffeners (1.3/4″ Parana pine core covered with 3 x 2oz c.s.m.)

    – Coachroom sides 3 x 2oz c.s.m

    – 3 x 2oz c.s.m. 1m wide over coachroof for the mast

    – 5 x 2oz c.s.m extra cockpit floor, seats and coaming

    Another drawing shows the anchor locker as ply core instead of balsa

    We definitely have balsa core on our coach roof because we have removed the leaking dorade vents as we are replacing them. It was damp but has now dried out ok (as a precaution we are going from 70mm vents to 90mm so will cut the core back a bit).

    The only thing we have removed from the deck is old davits that were not properly fitted with backing plates. I’m sorry but I don’t remember whether there was a core (it was very early on and I’ve only covered the holes with gaffer tape for the moment). When we deal with chainplates in the aft cabin I’ll find out for sure.

      Thanks very much for that David. I am just getting to learn about this site and am getting used to navigating around it. I have owned a grp boat (Vagabond 31) and then a steel yacht.(Freya 40) Now looking for my third yacht and a Rival 38 is high on the list. What does C.S.M mean. I am sure it will be obvious when you tell me Ha. Thanks Andy

        I’m assuming C.S.M means chopped strand mat. I don’t think any other forms of fibreglass cloth were widely used in the 1970’s. That would also have been with Polyester resins.
        We are using bio epoxy resins and woven glass for any repairs.

        Glad to help. There is an active FaceBook Group “Rival Owners Association”. I’m pretty sure they welcome people who have not joined the association and who are just interested in Rival’s.
